Girard High School
Jefferson Area Jr/Sr HS
The Falcon offense got it started by going 60 yards on their opening possession on six plays in 3 minutes with Knight finishing it off with a 2-yard plunge.
Henson reached into his bag of tricks with his special teams early catching the Indians (0-5, 0-3 AAC) with an onside kick which they recovered at the Girard 36 yard line.
The Falcons werenât able to score, but the field position played into their hand as the Jefferson defense was able to pressure Indians quarterback Mark Waid into forcing a pass on third and long into heavy traffic.
Zach Collins picked off the deflected pass and returned it 20 yards for Jeffersonâs second touchdown of the game.
âWe talk about it all the time,â Henson said. âYou have to win all three phases of the game.â
Henson said the teamâs preparation led to the early onside kick.
âWe scouted them on film, and we thought we saw an opportunity, so we went for it,â Henson said.
Knight scored his second touchdown in the second quarter on a 25-yard scamper to cap of an eight-play, 47 yard drive that spanned just less than four minutes.
The Falcons then scored on their first possession of the second half; this time through the air as Collins hooked up three times with Austin Patton on a scoring drive, including a 13 yard pass for a touchdown.
The Girard offense finally found some life in the third quarter. Jacob Ryser got loose for a 36-yard run then two plays later quarterback Mark Waid found Michael Belick on a 16-yard score.
The momentum was quickly diminished on Girard penalties. On the ensuing kickoff the Indains were flagged for a personal foul, then unsportsmanlike conduct. The two infractions set the Jefferson offense up at Girard 30, where the Indians were flagged again on the first play from scrimmage, this time for roughing the passer.
Collins ended the short drive, aided by 45 yards in penalties, with a 1-yard touchdown run.
The Indians went on to score on a 45-yard run by Waid, before Knight added his third score, going virtually untouched around the right end from 28 yards out to close out the scoring.
